Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology for Myopia Management

Orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K, is a non-surgical method used to temporarily reshape the cornea using specially designed gas permeable contact lenses. These lenses are worn overnight and removed in the morning, providing clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

How Does Ortho-K Work?
Orthokeratology retainer lenses gently reshape the cornea by applying pressure to its surface while you sleep. This reshaping corrects refractive errors such as myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism. The effect is temporary and cumulative, so the lenses need to be worn regularly to achieve and maintain clear vision.

Benefits of Ortho-K

  1. Vision Correction: Provides clear vision upon waking.
  2. Non-Surgical: No need for surgery or invasive procedures.
  3. Myopia Control: Studies have shown that Ortho-K can slow the progression of myopia in children and teenagers.
  4. Convenience: No need to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Myopia Control with Ortho-K
Ortho-K lenses are particularly effective in controlling myopia progression. The lenses create a peripheral myopic defocus, which is believed to slow down the elongation of the eye, a key factor in myopia progression. Research indicates that Ortho-K can reduce myopia progression by about 50-70% compared to standard glasses or contact lenses.

Suitability and Considerations
Ortho-K is suitable for individuals with mild to moderate myopia and astigmatism. It is most commonly used in children and teenagers, as their eyes are still growing and more responsive to treatment. However, not everyone is a good candidate for Ortho-K, and a thorough eye examinaion, including topographic scans of the eye is necessary to determine suitability.

Risks and Safety
While Ortho-K treatment is generally safe, there are some risks associated with its use. The most common issues include mild corneal staining and discomfort. In rare cases, more serious complications such as microbial keratitis (infection of the cornea) can occur. Regular after care appointments, frequent retainer lens changes and strict hygeine routines are crucial to minimise these risks.

OrthoK lenses have completely improved the quality of our life. The competency and service provided by Zacks London Eye Clinic has been nothing short of amazing.
