It’s Myopia Awareness Week. Now in its sixth year, it’s a great opportunity to talk about something we’re seeing more and more in practice: short‑sightedness (myopia) in children.
Myopia is becoming increasingly common, especially in children. In fact, many children begin to develop it during their primary school years, often without anyone noticing at first. [bhvi.org]
Because children don’t always realise their vision isn’t clear, early signs can easily be missed. They may simply think that blurry distance vision is “normal”.
Left unchecked, myopia can progress as the eye grows, meaning prescriptions can change quite quickly during childhood.
